15 Countries Named The Safest Destination For The 2026 Holiday

JAKARTA - When planning trips abroad, security factors are often a major concern. Although vigilance remains important, there are several countries that are known to be more comfortable and friendly to tourists.

This year, the Netherlands has been named the safest country in the world to visit in 2026 by travel insurance provider Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection.

The award was given because of the attitude of the peaceful Dutch people, the health care system is very good, and the overall high level of security.

The Netherlands is also considered very safe for female tourists, the LGBTQ+ community, and tourists from various backgrounds. This ranking increased dramatically because previously the Netherlands was in 14th position in 2024.

According to a statement from Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection, the way people think about security when traveling has now changed.

"Not only about the level of crime, but also access to health, climate stability, and inclusiveness. Respondents feel the Netherlands is superior in all these aspects," the company's representative told Travel + Leisure.

Even though it is classified as safe, the Netherlands has one thing that tourists need to pay attention to, namely bicycles. Cities like Amsterdam have a very large number of cyclists and fast, so tourists need to be careful when crossing the road or bicycle lane.

The Netherlands has succeeded in shifting Iceland. Now Iceland is the safest country in fourth place. Even so, Iceland is still considered the most peaceful country in the world. Iceland's biggest security challenge is the risk of volcanic eruptions. This could affect the main roads surrounding the country.

The position of the two safest countries is occupied by Australia, which gained high value in the health and security sector from the threat of terrorism. Austria is in third place, although the previous year it was not on the list. Canada completed the top five of the safest countries this year.

For the city category, Reykjavik in Iceland was chosen as the safest city in the world because none of the city's areas were considered dangerous. The next position is occupied by Copenhagen, Zurich, Amsterdam, and Honolulu.

This assessment was carried out based on a survey of more than 1,800 American tourists regarding their experiences in the last five years. In addition, additional data regarding terror threats, extreme weather, health conditions, and safety for vulnerable groups are also taken into consideration.

To make it safer when traveling, tourists are advised to bring trusted security devices and register in the STEP program from the US State Department in order to receive an emergency notification and make tracking easier if necessary.
