BRIN Builds A National Space Economy Ecosystem With Satellite Image Data
JAKARTA The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is determined to continue to build an integrated national space economy ecosystem. This development will focus on utilizing satellite image data.
This was conveyed by the Head of BRIN, Laksana Tri Handoko, at the National Coordination Meeting of Remote Sensing Satellite Images on Wednesday, October 29, 2025. Handoko highlighted the importance of post-integrating LAPAN data governance into BRIN in 2021.
"(Law Number 21 of 2013 concerning Space) mandates that satellite image data management in Indonesia must be integrated in an institution that regulates foreign affairs. After LAPAN became part of BRIN, the responsibility is now in BRIN," said Handoko.
Handoko explained that the national need for satellite image data for land and sea areas is very large. Indonesia should provide high-resolution data and very high independently.
However, it is undeniable that Indonesia still depends on overseas satellites to date, especially in obtaining raw remote sensing data. This data is obtained and managed by BRIN.
After processing, the data will be used by various ministries, institutions, and the private sector. Now, BRIN plans to change the mechanism for collaborative use of satellite image data between the government and the business sector.
"Data that is ready will be hosted in BRIN infrastructure. Business actors can develop platforms according to their segments, for example for forestry, plantations, fisheries, or agriculture," explained Handoko.

Currently, BRIN is preparing a new business model through the Geo-MIMO (Geoinformatics Multi-Input Multi-Output) platform. This platform is designed to integrate various satellite data sources into a ready-to-use uniform format.
The proposed business model for BRIN is based on license and actual use (usage-based licensing). Business actors will pay according to the volume of data or computing power they use after producing sales.
"Business actors will pay according to the volume of data or computing power used. They only pay after producing sales. This is efficient and encourages the emergence of a data-based economy," said Handoko.
Starting next year, BRIN will introduce a new mechanism for accessing national satellite image data. This mechanism is here to ensure that all data users have gone through an assessment and data storage process in BRIN infrastructure.
