OpenAI Free ChatGPT Go For A Year For Users In India

JAKARTA - OpenAI announced a major promotional program in India by providing free ChatGPT Go access for one year for all users who register from November 4. This step is taken to strengthen the company's expansion in one of its largest markets in the world.

In its announcement on Tuesday, October 28, OpenAI did not say how long this promotion period would last. Interestingly, old ChatGPT Go users in India will also automatically get a free extension for 12 months.

ChatGPT Go was first launched in India in August 2025 as OpenAI's cheapest paid package, for under $5 per month. After success in the Indian market, the service was later expanded to Indonesia and 16 other countries in Asia in early October.

India with more than 700 million smartphone users and more than 1 billion internet subscribers has become an important market for OpenAI. The company just opened an office in New Delhi in August and is building a local team to expand its presence in the South Asian region.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously called India the second largest market after the United States. However, the monetization of ChatGPT paid services in India is still a challenge. Data from Appfigures shows that in 90 days to August, the ChatGPT app recorded 29 million downloads, but only generated 3.6 million US dollars from in-app purchases.

ChatGPT Go offers 10 times greater usage capacity than the free version, including to produce text, create images, and upload files. In addition, this service has better memory to provide a more personal response.

"Since the initial launch of ChatGPT Go in India, the level of user adoption and creativity there has been encouraging," said Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT at OpenAI. We can't wait to see the amazing things that will be created, learned, and achieved by our users with this tool.

Competition in India's AI market is now getting fiercer. Perplexity has just partnered with cellular operator Airtel to provide free Perplexity Pro subscriptions to 360 million subscribers. Meanwhile, Google also launched a year-long free AI Pro package for students in India.

OpenAI is scheduled to hold a DevDay Exchange developer conference in Bengaluru on November 4, where the company is expected to announce a number of new initiatives for local developers and business people. India is now one of the fastest growing ChatGPT markets in the world, with millions of users interacting every day,
