NasDem Supports Discourse On Giving Hero Titles To Suharto

The chairman of the House of Representatives NasDem Party faction, Viktor Laiskodat, supports the plan to award the title of national hero to the 2nd President of the Republic of Indonesia, Suharto, due to historical traces and his contribution to national development.

According to him, every national figure has a trace of dedication that should be appreciated. Therefore, Viktor considered it important for the public to see this plan wisely and not to be trapped in a narrow assessment.

"In that context, we need to evaluate objectively the role of President Suharto in building economic foundations and maintaining national stability," Viktor said as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, October 27.

He revealed that a great nation is a nation that is wise in respecting the dedication and contribution of figures to the nation and state. Every era, he said, has big challenges and decisions taken for the sake of state continuity.

During Suharto's leadership, according to him, Indonesia was able to achieve a number of significant advances in the economic, infrastructure and education sectors. However, he also admitted that there was no perfect leader.

"Every time has its strengths and weaknesses. What is important is how we take lessons from the past to strengthen democratic, justice and humanitarian values today," he said.

On the other hand, Viktor reminded that the determination of the title of hero must go through comprehensive considerations, not only from a political perspective, but also moral, historical, and real contributions to the nation.

He hopes that this process will be a momentum for the Indonesian people to strengthen historical reconciliation and foster an inclusive national spirit.

We need to view the past as a mirror. From there, we can move on more maturely in building the future," said Viktor.
