The Minister Of Industry Said That Domestic Market Protection Is A Top Priority
Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita emphasized that protection against domestic markets is the government's top priority in maintaining national industrial resilience and competitiveness.
"I want to emphasize that domestic market protection is the highest priority. Reality shows that 80 percent of our industrial output is absorbed in the domestic market, while only 20 percent is exported," Agus said as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, October 27.
According to him, domestic market protection means maintaining four main sources of demand, namely government, households, the private sector, and investment.
For the government, he continued, the TKDN policy must be expanded in scope, so that state spending is really a driving engine for industrialization.
Meanwhile, for households and the private sector, it is necessary to strengthen people's purchasing power through protection policies.
"For investment, domestic market certainty is the main requirement for investors to invest," said the Minister of Industry.
In addition, he said, efforts are needed to strengthen trade barrier instruments in the form of tariffs and non-tariff barriers, as well as reorganize the entry port of finished imported products.
"Many of our industries lost not because they could not afford it, but because the market was flooded with imported products that fell without control. This protection policy is not blind protection. The goal is to create space for the national industry so that they can grow, innovate, and eventually become competitive," said the Minister of Industry again.
Despite focusing on the domestic market, Agus assessed, expansion to the global market remains important.
The diversification of the export market needs to be strengthened given the high uncertainty of geopoliticals and geoeconomics.
Several trade agreements, both bilateral and regional, provide opportunities for Indonesia to enter the global supply chain which has been difficult to penetrate.
"Industrial diplomacy must be strengthened, and we must dare to position Indonesia not only as exporters of raw materials, but as exporters of high-value manufacturing products," he said.
