Regarding The Provision Of Hero Titles For Suharto, MPR Chair Waits For Presidential Decree

JAKARTA - Chairman of the MPR RI Ahmad Muzani responded to the issue of awarding the title of national hero to the 2nd President of the Republic of Indonesia, Suharto, who reaped the pros and cons. Muzani said that the MPR was waiting for President Prabowo Subianto's decision.

"Later, we will wait for the president's decision, who will be appointed by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, in this case President Prabowo, for this year (Suharto) will be awarded the title of National Hero," Muzani told reporters, Friday, October 25.

According to Muzani, the president has careful consideration and views to give national heroes titles to figures according to their roles and service times when giving the best service to the nation and state.

"So I think we are waiting for the president's decision to give the title of national hero to the chosen figures," he said.

Including the existence of people who reject Suharto as a national hero, Muzani said that the decision was in the hands of the president. Even so, he considered that the issue of Suharto's 'past sins' should not be a problem anymore.

Because the MPR has officially revoked Suharto's name from the MPR Decree (Tap) Number 11 of 1998 concerning orders to organize a clean without corruption, collusion, nepotism (KKN), in the final session of the MPR RI final session for the period 2024-2029.

"Yes, we are waiting for the president's decision, but from the MPR side, in the past period the person concerned was declared clear, in the sense that he has carried out the process as stipulated in the TAP MPR so that it should not cause any more problems," explained Muzani.

Previously, Minister of Social Affairs (Mensos) Saifullah Yusuf alias Gus Ipul confirmed that the proposal of the 2nd President of the Republic of Indonesia Suharto as a national hero had gone through the trial process repeatedly. He said the discussion was carried out by the Council of Titles through certain mechanisms.

Gus Ipul admitted that he had heard of people who objected to the title of hero that would be pinned to Suharto. But according to him, differences of opinion are common.

"Yes, different opinions are allowed, so this has also been discussed by the team seriously. Repeatedly they (Degree Council) held a trial, have gone through that process. Now everything will depend on the Dewan Degree," Gus Ipul told reporters at the Ministry of Social Affairs, Central Jakarta, Thursday, October 23.
