Ecuador Frees Man On Ship Allegedly Transporting Drugs Attacked By US Troops

JAKARTA - The Ecuadorian Prosecutor's Office has stated that it will not detain Ecuadorian citizens who survived the US military offensive against ships suspected of transporting drugs in the Caribbean.

The man who was rescued by US troops after the attack arrived in Ecuador on Saturday last weekend and was released after prosecutors said there was no evidence of a crime committed.

"After the residents arrived, Anti-drug officers came to the Law Enforcement Unit to notify prosecutors, but there were no criminal reports or notifications of any crimes committed in Ecuador," the office said.

Last week, the US military attacked a semi-submersible ship, killing two crew members and rescuing two survivors one Ecuadorian citizen and one Colombian.

In a social media post, United States President Donald Trump said US intelligence confirmed the ship was mostly carrying fentanyl and other illegal narcotics.

Trump said the survivors would be sent back to their home country for detention and trial.
