Riots Break Out In Cameroon After Opposition Leader Claims To Win Election
JAKARTA - Riots broke out in Douala City, Cameroon, after opposition leader Issa Tchiroma announced her victory in the presidential election before official data was released.
The Africannews news portal reported on Thursday, October 16, Tchiroma, through social media previously declared itself victorious in elections and promised to publish a detailed report on the results of votes in each region in the coming days.
The statement sparked a wave of protests in Douala, Cameroon's largest city. Security forces in large numbers were deployed to control the situation.
As reported by ANTARA, according to an Africannews report, police were forced to fire tear gas to disperse the masses that began to act anarchically.

Meanwhile, the official results of Cameroon's presidential election are scheduled to be announced no later than October 26.
The election, which was held on Sunday (12/10), was attended by 12 candidates, including one female candidate. Incumbent President Paul Biya, who has led Cameroon for 43 years, is again running for power in his next term of office.
