Government Funds In The Future Reaches IDR 285.6 Trillion, Purbaya Curigai Has Interest Games

Minister of Finance Purbaya Yudhi Sadive revealed the alleged storage of central government funds in the form of time deposits in a number of banks.

Based on data as of August 2025, the amount of funds reached IDR 285.6 trillion. Purbaya assessed that this needs to be explored further, including its sources and objectives.

"It's a bit strange, if I want criticism. Wow, the central government has a lot of money, yes. Try that in December 2024, there will be IDR 204.2 trillion in savings. In 2023, IDR 204.1 trillion too. Now (August 2025) there will be IDR 285.6 trillion in futures. What money is that? Later we will investigate, "said Purbaya in the 1 Year Prabowo-Gibran Administration event, Thursday, October 16.

Purbaya admitted that he had asked the internal team about this, but had not yet received a satisfactory explanation.

"Don't let unemployed money also have me in banking. But if I ask my subordinates, I don't know what money it is. Maybe it's my turn," he said.

He suspects that the funds come from institutions under other government ministries or entities that place their funds in deposits to get interest.

"We are still investigating what money it is. But, if I ask my subordinates, they say they don't know. But, I'm sure they know. That's the amount of money in the deposit to get interest, right? " he said.

According to Purbaya, the banking system should be able to identify government-owned funds through certain codes, so that the existence of funds can be traced more accurately.

He also highlighted the existence of government funds stored in Bank Indonesia but the status is not yet completely clear.

"Yes, government money, there is money in BI, it's actually still unclear," he added.

Purbaya added that he would investigate all forms of related deposits, not only limited to deposits and also suspected the practice of interest games by certain parties.

The funds are spread across various national commercial banks, including the possibility of state-owned banks.

"In many of our commercial banks, maybe Himbara. But I will investigate again what money really is. In the past, it was considered that the central government's money was written there, it could be LPDP and so on. It should be separate, right," he explained.

Purbaya assessed that the placement of large amounts of funds in deposits was less efficient and worried that this would cause losses to the state, because the deposit interest was lower than the interest on bonds that must be paid by the government.

"It's too big if you put it in a deposit like that. I don't owe it. Because it's definitely a return from the bank, it's lower than the interest I paid for the bonds, right? I'll definitely lose if that's the case. I checked right," he said.

He emphasized that investigations will continue to be carried out to ensure that there is no practice of storing government funds that deviate or harm state finances.
