Extreme Hot Weather, Here Are Tips To Keep The House Cool Even Without An AC

JAKARTA - Extreme hot weather has hit the Jakarta area and its surroundings in recent times. The weather is even expected by the BMKG to last until the end of October until early November 2025.

To deal with extreme hot weather, the use of air conditioning at home has become an easy solution. However, those who do not have air conditioning at home can still keep the atmosphere of the house cool in the midst of extreme hot weather.

There are several tips that can be done to keep the house cool even without air conditioning as follows.

1. Close windows and curtains during the day

Closing windows or curtains during the day is highly recommended to keep the home temperature cool in the hot weather. This strategy may not be so effective at home that is heavily exposed to heat, but according to Adam Rysanek, professor at the School of Architecture UBC, this method can still be tried because there will be a difference.

"It sounds counter-intuitive, but when the temperature outside the room exceeds the temperature indoors, you need to close the building so as not to heat the room," Rysanek said, quoted from the University of British Columbia, on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.

2. Use two fans

The next tip that can be tried is to use two fans inside the house. You can direct the airflow with a fan.

If there are two windows, you can place one fan in one window to push the air out. While the other fan is placed in another window, to pull the air in will trigger a little circulation.

"It's small that the air will flow in through the window and out through other windows on the same track, unless you ask for it," he added.

3. Set the cooking and cleaning routines of the house

An easy way to keep the house cool without air conditioning is to adjust the cooking and cleaning routine of the house in such a way. Turn on the stove or oven can increase room temperature.

When the weather is hot, you should cook earlier when the air is not so hot. Domestic work such as ironing or using a dust suction can also increase the temperature, so consider changing the hours of doing it not during the hot weather.
