Coco Gauff Makes History At The Wuhan Open 2025

JAKARTA - The United States tennis player, Coco Gauff, successfully defeated his country's teammate, Jessica Pegula, to win the Wuhan Open 2025 tennis tournament.

The 21-year-old, who is ranked third in the world, won with a score of 6-4 and 7-5 to win the 11th single title in his career on Sunday, October 12, 2025.

"I want to thank my team, this is a great Asian tour (of the tournament)," Gauff said in his winning speech quoted by BBC Sport.

This result made Gauff the first tennis player in history to record a 9-0 win-loss in the hard-field final. All three defeats in the final occurred on clay.

This is the second Gauff title in this year's calendar or 11th overall in his career journey so far. Of these titles, two of them are Grand Slam and three of them are WTA 1000.

He also collected 10 titles from doubles, including one Grand Slam title and four WTA 1000 titles. He got one WTA 1000 title with Pegula at the Miami Open two years ago.

The final round match in Wuhan is the first time the two friends have met in the final round of a WTA tour tournament.

"It is an honor to play against you, as friends and fellow Americans in the final. This is our first final, so it is very fun to be able to play," said Pegula.

In this duel, Gauff scored 24 wins, 11 more than Pegula and two more than his own sum of mistakes.

The match started with a 15-shot rally, which was ended by Gauff with a striker striker on the line. It was the first point of six points in a row as he shot to lead 3-0 and then 4-1.

Pegula hit back with three games in a row to equalize to 4-4, but Gauff was able to get out of pressure to win the first set.

In the second set, Pegula shot up 3-0, but gauff then won three games in a row to equalize 3-3. Their match went hot after that until Gauff won dramatically.
