Tragic, 82 Percent Of Deaths On Jalan Raya Malaysia Are Motorcyclists

JAKARTA - Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated that Malaysia has lost around 60,000 people over the past 10 years due to traffic accidents. He also said he was concerned about the high number of deaths due to traffic accidents.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Highway Safety and Congestion in Malaysia, said 82 percent of the deaths involved motorcyclists and motorcyclists.

To note, Malaysian authorities allow motorbikes to be able to cross toll roads or freeways without being charged. There is no limit on the engine capacity (cc) of motorbikes that are allowed to cross toll roads.

Ahmad Zahid stated that around 90 percent of the 6,000 deaths from annual traffic accidents were individuals aged 30 years and under.

"This means that this country loses skilled labor almost every year. Imagine if 6,000 people died every year over the last decade - that means 60,000 deaths were caused by traffic accidents. These are statistics that are very worrying for the government," he said, quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, October 11.

Ahmad Zahid said this while speaking at the Ceremony for the Submission of Licenses for the MyLesen B2 State Level 2025 at the Bagan Datuk UMNO Complex, Bagan Datuk, Perak, Malaysia, Saturday, as reported by BERNAMA.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Village Progress and the Malaysian Region, appealed, especially the younger generation, to respect life when driving or riding a motorcycle.

"The price of your life, your parents, your family, your community, and your friends. This nation needs its young generation, which is its valuable asset," he said.

Ahmad Zahid said he also enjoys riding a motorcycle with a small and high-powered capacity and has been carrying out motorcycle expeditions abroad, but has always complied with traffic regulations and safety guidelines.
