JAKARTA - Malaysia managed to overtake Indonesia's position in the latest FIFA rankings. This happened following a landslide victory against Laos 3-0 in Group F of the Third Round of the 2027 Asian Cup Qualification.
Taking place at the New Laos National Stadium, Thursday, October 9, 2025, WIB night, Malaysia won through goals from Arif Aiman (54'), Dion Cools (68'), and Faisal Halim (90+8').

The increase in Malaysia's position also displaced the position of the Indonesian national team, which was previously ranked 119th with 1,151.26 points. Now, Indonesia must go down to the 120th place in the world.
The decline in Indonesia's position was also due to Indonesia's defeat to Saudi Arabia with a score of 2-3 in the inaugural Group B match of the 2026 Asian Zone World Cup Qualifications on Thursday, October 9, 2025, early morning WIB.
The defeat made Indonesia lose 6.68 points. Initially, the defeat had not had an impact on Indonesia's ranking. However, the situation changed after Malaysia won a landslide victory over Laos, which immediately changed the ranks of FIFA rankings.
The Indonesian national team will next play a crucial match against Iraq in the second match of Group B of the 2026 World Cup Qualification Fourth Round which will be held in Jeddah on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at 02.30 WIB.
Victory over Iraq is not only important to keep hope of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup finals, but can also improve the position in the FIFA rankings.
If they win, Indonesia has the potential to pocket an additional 18 points, which can again boost the position of the Garuda Squad in the FIFA rankings.
