Not Only To Prevent Pregnancy, These Are Other Benefits Of Condoms That Are Rarely Known

JAKARTA - Condoms are one of the tools that are often used during sexual intercourse to prevent pregnancy. Although often used to prevent pregnancy, condoms have other benefits.

Another benefit of using condoms during sex is preventing sexually transmitted infections (IMS). It should be noted that IMS can occur in everyone, through vaginal, oral, or anal sex.

"You can always catch IMS, no matter what type of sex you do, be it anal, oral, or vagina," said Dr. Tanaya Narendra, quoted from Healthshots, on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.

In fact, some IMS can even be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. Therefore, IMS must be prevented from happening, one of which can be done by using condoms.

Condoms protect themselves from the occurrence of IMS, including transmission of the HIV virus during sexual intercourse. Condoms act as physical barriers preventing exchange of body fluids and reducing skin contact infected during sexual activity.

Doctor Tanaya recommends properly using condoms during sexual activity. If you use sex toys in sharing, also make sure to use condoms on the toys.

"Make sure to always cover the penis with condoms in cases of anal, oral, or vaginaal sex," he said.

"If you share toys during vaginal sex, make sure to always use condoms on those toys too," he added.

However, keep in mind that condoms do not provide preventive benefits to IMS which causes extra-genital pulsations, namely sifilis or herpes. To prevent this condition, carry out routine tests for IMS, especially for new couples.
