Merahwit Batik Becomes The Theme Of National Batik Day 2025, What Does It Mean?
JAKARTA - Every October 2, Indonesia commemorates National Batik Day. This commemoration is a special moment to celebrate this priceless cultural wealth.
This year, the theme carried for the celebration of National Batik Day is 'Merewit Batik', with the official icon, namely Cirebon Merewit Writing Batik. This theme was chosen because it describes many meanings.
Starting from the beauty of batik motifs, followed by the philosophical meaning behind them, such as subtlety, perseverance, and dedication in preserving tradition in the midst of modernization.
Quoted from the official website of the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin), on Thursday, October 2, 2025, the term merawit refers to the neat and tight fine line details in batik motifs. This technique usually uses wall canting with hot nights, which produces thin scratches that do not break over a light cloth.
The merawit motif is famous for its complexity and requires extra patience in making it. This is what causes merewit batik to be seen as a symbol of the persistence of craftsmen as well as a reflection of the subtlety of the archipelago culture.
According to the records of the Indonesian Batik Foundation, the meliwit batik also symbolizes the subtlety of taste and regularity. This value is very important to maintain harmony in social life.
With the celebration of National Batik Day with the theme Merawit Batik, it is hoped that it can further foster the love of the Indonesian people for batik, especially for the younger generation.

Meanwhile, in today's modern era, batik is increasingly being looked at by the younger generation as a work of art as well as a high-value fashion. A number of Indonesian designers also present batik in modern nuances that make batik not only traditional clothing, but also a medium of everyday expression.
"From Gen X, then to Millennials, then Gen Z they have different perceptions about batik. We feel there is a difference and try to make some batik that can meet that need," said CEO Iwan Tirta Batik, Widiyana Sudirman.
