Case Of Extortion, Head Of Anesthesiology Anesthesiology Undip Sentenced To 2 Years In Prison

JAKARTA - Head of the Aestheticology Study Program of the Faculty of Medicine (FK) Diponegoro University (Undip) Semarang Taufik Eko Nugroho was sentenced to 2 years in prison in a case of extortion against students of the Specialist Doctor Education Program (PPDS) from 2018 to 2023.

The verdict read by Chief Judge Chief Justice Muhammad Djohan Arifin during a trial at the Semarang District Court, Wednesday, October 1, was lighter than the demands of the public prosecutor for 3 years in prison.

The judge agreed with the proof of the article from the public prosecutor in the case.

In their consideration, the judge assessed that the defendant was proven to have ordered PPDS anesthesia students to deposit a sum of money which was referred to as operational costs for education.

The judge assessed that there was a hierarchical power relationship that resulted in the resident doctors unable to refuse the collection of money intended for the purpose of the exam.

The total money collected during the period 2018 to 2023 reached IDR 2.49 billion.

In their consideration, the judge assessed that the defendant's actions did not support the government in realizing friendly and affordable education.

"The defendant was convoluted in providing information," he added.

In this case, the court also tried the administrative staff of the Anesthesiologist Study Program of the Faculty of Medicine, Undip Semarang, Sri Maryani.

Sri Maryani, who was tasked with receiving deposits of education operational costs from the treasurer of various batches of PPDS residents, was sentenced to 9 months in prison.

Based on this decision, both the defendant and the public prosecutor both expressed their thoughts.
