Is The Recognition Of Many Countries Has A Big Impact On Palestine?
JAKARTA Although it is a historic decision, the recognition of Western countries of Palestine needs to be accompanied by further action, according to analysts.
By the end of 2023 Palestine was recognized by 138 countries. That number increased to 145 countries by the end of 2024. Entering the final week of September 2025, this figure jumped to more than 153 countries, after a number of other countries submitted official recognition.
Canada, the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Australia recognized Palestinian countries on Sunday (21/9/202005), a symbolic response to Israel's ongoing war in Gaza and the expansion of territory in the West Bank.
Most recently, there is France which also officially recognizes the Palestinian state. French President Emmanuel Macron said his time for peace had arrived and "no one confirmed the ongoing war in Gaza."
Shortly before the announcement of Palestinian state recognition, Shosh Bedrosian, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said the action was "absurd and a reward for terrorism".
At an event in East Jerusalem on September 15, Netanyahu promised his supporters that the Palestinian state would be in no tone.
The recognition of the Palestinian state by France, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia is an important moment. The admission comes ahead of the High-Level Conference on Palestine and the Two-State Solution, in a series of agendas for the United Nations General Assembly (SMUB) at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, United States, on September 22-30, 2025.
Former Palestinian official Xavier Abu Eid said his country was never as strong as it is today around the world than it is now. "The world this time moves for Palestine," he said.
Meanwhile, Palestinian diplomat Huzam Zomlot earlier this month stated that the recognition was a crucial moment. He hopes that the two-state solution, which has been echoed by a number of countries recently, can be implemented.
"That means Israel coexists with a viable Palestinian state. Currently, both of them are not materialized," said Zomlot, head of the Palestinian Mission to the United Kingdom.
On one occasion, Zomlot also said that "the long-awaited acknowledgment marks the end of Britain's rejection of the human rights of the Palestinian people that cannot be repealed for freedom and independence in our homeland".
"This marks an inevitable move towards justice, peace, and improvement over historical mistakes, including the British colonial heritage, the Balfour Declaration, and its role in the deprivation of the rights of the Palestinian people," he said.
On the same day a number of countries recognized the Palestinian state, at least 55 Palestinians were killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza. In addition, at least 37 people died in Gaza, where the Israeli archipelago launched a brutal attack. Seeing the current situation, the analyst's pana expressed skepticism that the appeal could improve the condition of Palestine, which is currently suffering from Israeli aggression.
Citing Al Jazeera, Israel has killed 65,284 people and injured 166,575 people in the war in Gaza which has been going on since October 2023, although it is believed the actual figure is bigger than this. On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched an attack on Israel, of which 1,139 people died and 200 were taken hostage.
The recognition of the Palestinian state by Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, France, has succeeded in capturing the world's attention and making headlines. However, analysts say this is just a small and symbolic step in the continued insults, killings and expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.
The war on Gaza, which experts and human rights groups call a form of genocide, is believed not to subside despite a number of European countries recognizing the Palestinian state some time ago.
"As long as it is not accompanied by concrete actions, such as sanctions, arms embargoes, and the implementation of a no-fly zone in occupied Palestine with a coalition of troops from the international community to ease the suffering of the people, I remain pessimistic," said Chris Osieck, a freelance researcher who has contributed to investigations from the Forensic Architecture and Bellingcat on Palestine and Israel.

Meanwhile, a professor at the Postgraduate Study Institute, Mohamad Elmasry, said that the steps taken by European countries recognized that Palestinian countries were mostly performive.
I think they are under increasing pressure from the international community and also their local population to do something. I think this is their way of doing something or saying that they are doing something without really taking substantive action, "said Elmasry.
Rida Abu Rass, a Palestinian political observer, acknowledged that recognition from European countries has an important meaning to his country. Another impact, Israel is increasingly isolated in the eyes of the world.
To date, it means that only the United States, a small part of Europe and the Baltic, South Korea, Japan, and several other countries do not recognize the Palestinian state. Although most of the world supports the status of Palestine, the country is still not a full member state of the United Nations (UN).
"This recognition does not grant new privileges to the United Nations, nor does it allow Palestine to become a member of a new intergovernmental institution, without US support," Abu Rass told Al Jazeera.
Palestine is currently a non-member observer state. To become a full member a recommendation is needed by the UN Security Council (followed by a vote of the UN General Assembly), it is very unlikely, given the veto rights of the US," he continued.
But, that doesn't mean you have to reduce this step.
International pressure is increasing on Israel to end the war in Gaza, especially from Europe. The boycott campaign is increasingly intense, which could result in Israel being expelled from Eurovision and participating in international sports competitions.
Not only that, the European Union has also recently discussed increasing tariffs for some Israeli goods and imposing sanctions on some Israeli leaders.
This confession does not have a direct impact on Israel's actions in Gaza, but may indicate the country's willingness to take concrete steps, which will have a direct impact on Israel's actions in Gaza, such as the two-way arms embargo, which means neither selling nor buying weapons to and from Israeli manufacturers," Abu Rass concluded.
