Landslides Break Road Access, BNPB Records 858 Isolated Residents In Sidenreng Rappang, South Sulawesi

JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said as many as 858 people in Sidenreng Rappang Regency, South Sulawesi, were still isolated due to landslides that cut off road access between villages since Friday, September 26.

"Until Saturday, September 27, there is no alternative route that residents can pass. Rain that is still pouring down also hampers efforts to handle it," said Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Abdul Muhari in Jakarta, Antara, Monday, September 29.

According to Abdul, seven hamlets in Leppangeng Village, Pitu Riase District, were affected by landslides last Friday at around 08.05 WITA. The landslide material blocked the road and cut off local residents' access.

BNPB confirmed that there were no casualties as a result of the incident. The joint team with local residents are still trying to manually clean up landslide material using simple equipment.

"Cleaning is done using a hoe due to a steep landslide field," he said.

He explained that this incident occurred in the midst of atmospheric conditions influenced by several low-pressure systems in the northern hemisphere, including Tropical Cyclone Bualoi which triggered heavy rains in several parts of Indonesia.

BNPB mengimbau masyarakat di wilayah rawan bencana untuk tetap waspada terhadap potensi hujan deras yang dapat memicu longsor dan banjir serta selalu mengikuti informasi resmi dari BMKG maupun BPBD daerah setempat.
