The Increase In Countries That Recognize Palestine Shows International Hope

JAKARTA - The increasing number of countries acknowledging Palestinian statehood "completely shows public opinion and hope with the international community," China said Wednesday.

"The Palestinian issue is at the heart of the Middle East issue. The two-state solution is the only feasible solution," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun at a press conference, quoted from Anadolu, September 24.

China will work closely with the international community to "fully support the Palestinian people in realizing their independent country," added Guo.

Beijing's statement comes as six other countries officially recognize the Palestinian state, in a new bid for a two-state solution to the decades-long Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Luxembourg, Belgium, Andorra, France, Malta, Monaco, and San Marino recognized the Palestinian State on Monday and Tuesday, on the sidelines of a series of United Nations' 80th General Assembly Sessions in New York.

The move comes after Britain, Canada, Australia, and Portugal announced Sunday's recognition, bringing the total number of countries recognizing Palestine to 159 of the 193 UN member states since the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat declared the country Algeria in 1988.
