IBM And NASA Release Open-Source AI Model For Solar Activity Predictions

JAKARTA - IBM and NASA launched Surya, a state-of-the-art open-source model foundation developed to analyze high-resolution solar observation data.

The model is claimed to be able to predict the impact of solar activity on Earth and space-based technology, including protecting various things such as GPS navigation, power grids, to telecommunications from the ever-changing nature of the Sun.

Surya's name is taken from Sanskrit which means the Sun, representing significant progress in the use of artificial intelligence for interpretation of the sun's image and space weather research.

Surya is part of IBM's broader efforts to adopt a general and automated approach to algorithms that can be found, tested, and developed on a large scale.

Surya is one example of how IBM positions AI not only as a tool, but also as a driver of scientific discovery.

The presence of this model is an effort to protect vital infrastructure from the impact of solar phenomena, such as solar flares and the ejection of the corona mass, which is known to damage satellites, disrupt flight navigation, and trigger power outages.

Yang di mana menurut skenario risiko sistemik yang dibuat oleh Lloyd's, perekonomian global dapat menghadapi potensi kerugian sebesar 2,4 triliun dolar AS dalam periode lima tahun, dengan kerugian yang diperkirakan mencapai 17 miliar dolar AS akibat ancaman kemungkinan storm matahari.

The model will join Prithvi's previously released line of foundation model, including geospatial models and weather models.

Surya has gone through pre-training using Earth observation data over the past 40 years from NASA MERRA-2, so that it can be applied to various global, regional, and local scales.

With the release of Surya on Hugging Face, IBM and NASA democratize access to advanced tools to understand and predict solar weather and scientific exploration.

"By releasing this AI model on Hugging Face, we open access for scientists, business people, and policymakers to build on a common foundation to increase climate awareness," said Roy Kosasih, President Director of IBM Indonesia.
