At The United Nations Session, Brazilian President Condemns Trump's 'attack' Through Tariffs To Sanctions

JAKARTA - Brazilian President Luiz Inrypto Lula da Silva told the UN General Assembly a recent " unilateral attack" against his country's institutions and economy is unacceptable. Lula's statement became a strong rebuke for United States (US) foreign policy.

Lula's remarks echoed his persistent criticism of US President Donald Trump for imposing tariffs, visa restrictions, and financial sanctions in response to the trial and verdict of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro over the coup plan after he lost the 2022 election.

"Attacks on sovereignty, arbitrary sanctions, and unilateral intervention are becoming commonplace," Lula said, without naming Trump.

"There is no justification for unilateral and arbitrary actions against our institutions and the economy," he continued.

On Monday, Washington imposed sanctions on the wife of the judge who presided over Bolsonaro's trial at the Supreme Court, which Trump called a "witch hunt", and revoked the visa of six top Brazilian officials.

The Trump administration has previously imposed sanctions on Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes under the Magnitsky Act and imposed a 50% tariff on US imports of many Brazilian goods.

Lula also defended investigations and legal proceedings that led to a guilty verdict against Bolsonaro, who was sentenced to 27 years in prison for attempted a coup to defend power.

"He has full rights to defend himself," said Lula.

"In front of the world, Brazil sends a message to all of their autocrat candidates and supporters, our democracy and sovereignty cannot be negotiated," said the President of Brazil.
