No Longer Optional, Minister Of Home Affairs Tito Encourages Agriculture To Enter Mandatory Programs

JAKARTA - Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian emphasized the importance of revising the Regional Government Law so that the agricultural sector is no longer optional, but is a mandatory program run by local governments.

Tito said that food placement is a mandatory government matter related to basic services in the revision of Law Number 23 of 2014 concerning Regional Government is important.

"Actually, it is interesting if it can be revised by regional law, this agriculture will go from optional to mandatory," Tito said at the Coordination Meeting for the Acceleration of Implementation of the Downstream Plantation Priority Commodity Program held by the Ministry of Agriculture in Jakarta, Antara, Monday, September 22.

In the meeting which was attended by a number of governors and regents/mayors throughout Indonesia, Tito said that in the current regional government system, agriculture is still the preferred category of 32 concurrent programs carried out with the central and regional governments, in contrast to the mandatory sectors such as education and health.

According to Tito, revisions are needed so that agriculture is equal to a mandatory program for regional heads so that every local government has a full responsibility to ensure the sustainability of this sector for national food security.

The Minister of Home Affairs gave exceptions to Jakarta, which geographically does not have adequate agricultural land. However, urban areas can still support through industrialization, packaging, and processing of agricultural and plantation products.

"Except for Jakarta. Jakarta is told to farm, it can't be done, there is no land, it's indeed a service city here, Jakarta," he said.

He assessed that traditional agricultural-based Indonesia must transform towards industrial-based modern agriculture in order to be able to increase added value, create jobs, and encourage global competitiveness.

Tito is optimistic that if agriculture becomes a mandatory sector in local government, Indonesia will not only achieve food self-sufficiency, but also have the potential to become the dominant exporter in the international market.

This, according to him, can be the key to getting out of the trap of middle income traps while strengthening Indonesia's position as a world economic force in 2045.

He further said that President Prabowo Subianto's full support for the agricultural sector must be followed by governors, regents, and mayors, so that national synergy is built in strengthening food security and accelerating agricultural-based economic leaps.

“Saya harapkan seluruh gubernur, bupati, wali kota memiliki pemikiran yang sama dengan Bapak Presiden,” kata Mendagri.

"I hope that all governors, regents, mayors have the same thoughts as the President," said the Minister of Home Affairs.
