Introduced At JMS, BYD Will Sign PHEV Technology To Japan Through This Model

JAKARTA - China's largest electric vehicle manufacturer, BYD plans to bring a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) to the Japanese automotive market, which will be introduced at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo.

Based on a report from local media Nikkei, quoted on Sunday, September 21, the model BYD will introduce at the event is Sealion 6 PHEV, also known as Song Plus in the local Chinese market.

Details of specifications and launches will be announced at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo in October 2025. Of course, it is highly anticipated for its work in the Japanese market.

Japan's BYD President Astok Tofukuji said that the launch of PHEV would help address travel issues that are often associated with BEVs.

"This is an important step in expanding BYD's presence in Japan," he said.

As is known, PHEV combines recharged batteries with an internal combustion engine. This vehicle offers the experience of driving like an electric vehicle at low speeds, but relies on engines for longer distances, reducing fears of reach.

Unlike conventional hybrid models, PHEV can be occupied externally and can function as backup power during emergency or outdoor use.

Competition in the Japanese PHEV market remains tight, with Toyota and Mitsubishi holding a significant market share. Models like Toyota Harrier and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV dominate this segment.

Although Sealion 6 is considered less competitive in terms of fuel range and efficiency compared to domestic competitors, BYD aims to position it at a lower price than the popular model in the Sakura Country.

BYD's penetration in Indonesia

BYD is currently only selling electric cars in Indonesia, but this brand does not rule out the possibility of plunging into the PHEV segment in the country. This was revealed by the Head of Public & Government Relations of PT BYD Motor Indonesia Luther Panjaitan.
