Uveitis' Eye Condition Becomes One Of The Great Contributors Of Blindness

JAKARTA - Inflammatory in the eyes commonly marked by redness, or also called uveitis, is a serious eye condition that cannot be ignored. Uveitis is one of the big contributors to the number of blindness after cataracts and glaukuma.

This was conveyed by a subspecialist in infection and eye immunology, dr. Eka Octaviani Budiningtyas, Sp.M. He said that blindness due to uveitis occurred around 20 to 25 percent.

"The cause of blindness (due to uveitis) is around 20 to 25 percent. So it's world wide, so it's about the percentage," said Doctor Vani as he is called, when met in Menteng, Jakarta, written on Friday, September 19, 2025.

Doctor Vani said that the current diagnosis of uveitis cases is still low. This is due to the lack of patient awareness of the red eye, which is often considered a trivial and often ignored problem.

Therefore, Doctor Vani suggested that the red eyes that keep repeating should not be taken lightly. The more frequent it repeats, the more damage the eye structure from the front to the back, and become severe chronic inflammation.

This can trigger complications such as cataracts, glaukuma, retinal damage that leads to permanent blindness. Uveitis causes also need to be watched out for, such as bacterial or viral infections, parasites, autoimmune, blunt object trauma, to unknown or idiopathic causes.

"Well, what should be asked the most is whether the symptoms are repeated, we say recurrent. So sometimes the patient likes to say 'yes, Doc, it's often done, it's gone, it appears again'. It must be suspicious, maybe uveitis," concluded Doctor Vani.
