BNPB Rapid Response Team Moves To Nabire After The Central Papua Guncang Earthquake

JAKARTA - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) sent a rapid reaction team to Nabire, Central Papua, on Friday afternoon to deal with the impact of the earthquake that rocked the area.

"This afternoon, the BNPB rapid reaction team led by one of the echelon II officials will go to Nabire," said BNPB Head Lt. Gen. Suharyanto at a press conference at Graha BNPB, Jakarta, Friday, September 19.

He explained that the rapid reaction team would accompany the Nabire Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to conduct an assessment to determine disaster status.

This assessment determines whether the situation in Nabire will be upgraded to an emergency response. We are still waiting for the results. Whether the status is sufficient at the city or provincial level, we are waiting for an assessment," he said.

If conditions worsened, Suharyanto said he would immediately go to Nabire.

"We ensure the basic needs of refugees, damage to buildings, infrastructure, people's homes, we will handle them optimally," he said.

Previously, the earthquake occurred at 01.19 WIB or 03.19 WIT. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the earthquake had no potential for a tsunami.

The earthquake was located at coordinates 3.47 South Latitude and 135.49 East Longitude, about 29 kilometers northwest of Nabire City with a depth of 24 kilometers.

Suharyanto said there were no casualties as a result of the earthquake. The damage that occurred was relatively insignificant. "In general, this damage is not significant," he said.

Damage recorded includes one collapsed bridge, two heavily damaged houses, broken glass at the regent's office, damaged church ceiling, and several broken glass at Nabire Airport.
