Airlangga: ExxonMobil And BP Investment Commitment Rp246 Trillion To Develop CCUS In RI

JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto revealed that the world's giant energy companies, namely ExxonMobil and BP, are committed to providing investment to develop Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage or CCUS in Indonesia.

Airlangga said the government was pushing for the CCUS project because Europe would implement a Carbon Border Adjustment Technism, which would make goods imports from Indonesia taxable if they were not carbon neutral.

He added that the government received a commitment from ExxonMobil and BP with a total of 15 billion US dollars or around Rp. 246.5 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp. 16,430 per US dollar) for CCUS development in the country.

"We have also prepared CCUS up to 600 gigatons. Now BP and ExxonMobil are committed to investing in Indonesia in the future, 3-5 years (as big as) 15 billion US dollars," said Airlangga at the Green Initiative Conference (GIC) at the Borobudur Hotel, Jakarta, Wednesday, September 17.

According to him, BP already has a CCUS project in Tangguh Train 3, namely Ubadari CCUS (UCC) in Bintuni Bay, West Papua, which is expected to increase natural gas production.

In addition, ExxonMobil has also started developing the CCS project in the Sunda Asri Basin, in collaboration with PT Pertamina (Persero) and BUMN from South Korea, Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC).

"So, this is one built in Tangguh (Papua) because in Tangguh they also need products instead of LNG green, then in Exxon there will also be new refinery investments using carbon capture. So, this will be a new green product, zero emissions," he said.
