London Police Determined To Fight The Theft Of Luxury Hours To Mobile Snatching
JAKARTA - The London Police plan to use facial recognition technology to deploy more personnel to combat the city's robbery problem.
The head of the new task force specifically focused on crimes in West End said the Metropolitan Police were determined to make the area "the least friendly environment for (criminals) to operate anywhere".
Shopping streets in West End, Oxford Street and Regent Street, as well as the surrounding areas, Mayfair and Knightsbridge, have earned a reputation as places of brutal theft, giving rise to the term 'Rolexmen' due to the many luxury stolen watches.
Mobile snatching, often carried out by people who use electric bicycles, is also rife in vulnerable areas, which makes some international tourists reluctant to return.
The perpetrators will be pursued as part of an agreement between the police, the Westminster Council, the mayor's office and business people to tackle crime.
Commander Andyturstone said criminals who are known to be being chased using technology and information from security officers in shops.
"Our goal is to make West End the most unfriendly environment for (criminals) to operate anywhere," he said, quoted from The National September 15.
"We want to make it the safest environment for tourists, residents and workers. We will do it through a number of initiatives," he continued.
"There will be more officers and tighter supervision, the use of facial recognition technology is one of the tools," he said.
Furthermore, he also said that criminals who use violence are likely to commit violence at home, which suggests police may be able to obtain a warrant for allegations of domestic violence.
Another tactic is to focus on traffic violations because it is easy to prove.
"We can arrest criminals who commit violence on traffic charges, even though they do not have a vehicle, which will disturb and disturb them," he said.
"Punishment is not everything, if we can stop the perpetrators of the crime, it can be very valuable," saidtenstone.
