Deezer Calls 28% New Music Content Fully AI-Made

JAKARTA - The latest report from French music streaming service Deezer has revealed a significant increase in the number of music generated by artificial intelligence (AI) uploaded to their platform.

According to Deezer, currently 28% of the entire music uploaded daily is entirely made by AI. This figure is equivalent to more than 30,000 new songs every day.

This figure shows a sharp spike in data previously reported, in which in January, Deezer reported that AI-made content accounted for about 10% of total daily uploads. This number increased to 18% in April and has now hit a 28% high.

To tackle this spike, Deezer has taken several steps. Since the start of the year, they have implemented an AI detection tool, and in June they committed to labeling each AI-made song to be transparent to users. In addition, content completely created by AI will be removed from algorithmic recommendations and editorial playlists.

"After a major increase throughout the year, AI music is now an important part of uploading daily songs to music streaming services, and we want to take the lead in minimizing any negative impacts on artists and fans," said Alexis Lanternier, CEO of Deezer, citing NME, Monday, September 15.

Deezer is also battling fraudulent activities associated with AI music. Although AI content only accounts for about 0.5% of the total streaming on the platform, the analysis shows that 70% of these AI-song playback are detected as scams, usually done by bots to produce royalties illegally.

Deezer also ensured that the identified streaming cheats would be exempt from royalty payments.

Our approach is simple: we removed the fully AI-generated content from algorithmic recommendations, and we did not include it in the editorial playlist, "Landerier said.

"In this way, we ensure the impact on the collection of royalties remains minimal while providing a transparent user experience. And most importantly, we continue to fight fraud activity, which is the main driver behind the fully generated content uploading of AI," he added.

For information, Deezer's report comes amid growing concerns in the music industry.

A study by CISAC and PMP Strategy, which also involves Deezer, estimates that nearly 25% of creators' revenue could be at risk by 2028, which could reach up to 4 billion euros.

The issue includes concerns about AI companies training their models using copyrighted material and legal potential that could weaken copyright protection to facilitate AI development.
