Coordinating Minister Yusril Ensures Makassar Riot Detainees Get Fair Treatment

MAKASSAR - Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correction Yusril Ihza Mahendra guarantees fair treatment for prisoners in rioting cases during demonstrations detained at the South Sulawesi Regional Police.

During a working visit to the South Sulawesi Regional Police Headquarters (Mapolda), Makassar, Wednesday, September 10, Yusril emphasized the government's commitment to upholding the law fairly and ensuring

"The government guarantees that the legal process will run according to applicable regulations and still upholds human rights," said Yusril as confirmed in Jakarta, Thursday, September 11.

Yusril also emphasized that legal assistance is the right for detainees and asks that every detainee be given access to legal aid.

He said the rule of law must go hand in hand with respect for human dignity.

Yusril explained that the legal steps taken by the government were not only aimed at maintaining order but also ensuring justice for all citizens.

Accompanied by the South Sulawesi Police Chief Inspector General Rusdi Hartono, Coordinating Minister Yusril inspected the detention room at the South Sulawesi Police Headquarters which was inhabited by 13 participants in the demonstration at the end of August 2025 which resulted in chaos.

They come from the background of students, workers, and the general public.

On that occasion, Yusril had a dialogue with the detainees to hear their condition directly.

"I want to make sure they are treated well, there is no violence or coercion," he said.

The visit of Coordinating Minister for Human Rights, Imipas, emphasized that the government not only monitors the legal process, but also ensures that the basic rights of citizens remain protected, even in post-prosecution situations.

The demonstration in Makassar, South Sulawesi, was said to have resulted in four casualties. The victim died as a result of being trapped when the masses burned the Makassar DPRD Building, Friday (29/8) night.

The four victims were Kasi Kesra, Ujung Tanah Makassar District, named Syaiful Anwar, Ubay (photographer of the Makassar DPRD), Sarina (a companion staff member of the Makassar DPRD, Andi Tendri Uji) and a member of the Civil Service Police Unit named Budi.
