Two Experts Advance In Candidates At ILC And ITLOS, Deputy Minister Of Foreign Affairs Hasas: Indonesia's Commitment To Active Contribution

"The nomination of two Indonesian representatives in international organizations is part of Indonesia's commitment to active conflict in the world," said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Arif Havas Oegroseno.

Deputy Foreign Minister Havas conveyed this regarding the nomination of two Indonesian experts, Professor Eddy Pratomo as a judge of the International Tribune for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) and Professor Hikmahanto Juwana as a member of the International Law Commission (ILC).

In order to introduce and raise support for their candidacy, the Indonesian government held a diplomatic reception with the theme "Strengthening International Law as the Foundation of Global Governance" at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, September 4.

"This nomination is part of Indonesia's commitment to actively contribute to the development of international law and enforcement of international law of the sea, especially as the largest archipelagic country in the world," said Deputy Foreign Minister Havas in a statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Monday, September 8.

"Especially for ITLOS, the presence of Indonesia will provide a new perspective, as well as fulfill the geographical representation of the Southeast Asia region," continued Deputy Foreign Minister Havas.

Furthermore, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia explained that the nomination of candidates for the ILC also continued Indonesia's leadership in strengthening and developing the international legal process. Previously, Professor Mochtar Kusumaatmadja and Ambassador Nugroho Wisnumurti were believed to be members of the ILC.

The selection of ITLOS judges for the period 2026-2035 will be held at a meeting of the Countries members of the International Marine Law Convention in New York, United States.

The meeting, which will be held in June 2026, will elect seven new judges to replace the judges whose terms of office end.

Meanwhile, the selection of ILC members for the 2028-2032 term is scheduled to be held in November 2027 at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. These members will be selected in personal capacity.

The nomination of Professor Hikmahanto Juwana and Professor by Indonesia in the two prestigious agencies underscores Indonesia's strong commitment to advancing the development of international law, both regionally and globally, and in order to play a key role in forming an international legal framework related to various issues.

This nomination is expected to be a way for Indonesia to strengthen its role and actively contribute to the maintenance of world order as stated in the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia.
