Anthropic Agrees To Pay A Fine Of IDR 24.6 Trillion To Complete Copyright Lawsuit

JAKARTA Anthrop agreed to pay a fine for the case of using copyrighted books without permission to train Claude's Artificial Intelligence (AI) model.

The company will pay $1.5 billion. The deal has been submitted to a federal judge in San Francisco. Reporting from Reuters, this is the largest copyright fine payment in history, particularly in the AI era.

"This settlement sends a strong message to AI companies and creators," said the lawyers who filed a class action lawsuit, quoted on Saturday, September 6.

The lawyer added that taking copyrighted work from a pirated website is a wrong act. Therefore, Anthropic must pay a large amount of fine as a form of responsibility.

This deal is the first in a series of similar lawsuits. Other tech companies, such as OpenAI, Microsoft, and Meta, are also facing similar charges. As part of the settlement, Anthropic will destroy copies of the downloaded book to train its AI model.

However, the company still has the potential to face claims of material-related violations generated by its AI model. The settlement fund of IDR 24.6 trillion amounts to USD 3,000 (IDR 49 million) for each of the 500,000 downloaded books. This number could increase if more works were identified.

Previously, Judge William Alsup decided that Anthropic used authors' books fairly to train Claude. However, he also found that Anthropic violated copyright by storing more than 7 million pirated books in the central library.
