Volkswagen Will Change Naming Strategy For Electric Cars, Choose To Use Popular Names

JAKARTA Volkswagen (VW) is preparing to take major steps in its electrification strategy. The German automaker will introduce a new naming system for its electric vehicle lineup, by reviving a line of iconic names that are already familiar to automotive lovers.

According to the ArenaEV report, Thursday, September 4, this major change starts with the ID.2 which will be present in the production version with a new name: ID. Polo. The car is scheduled to launch next year, while the ID. Polo GTI high performance version will follow in 2026. This news marks a new era of VW branding strategy that slowly leaves the ID which has been attached to its electric car.

The first public debut of this step will take place at the Munich Motor Show, September 8'14. Even the day before, September 7, VW will introduce ID. The CROSS concept, which is also confirmed to get a new name when entering the production line.

Volkswagen not only changed its name, but also promised to improve quality in future electric car lines, including the use of materials with a more luxurious and soft touch in the cabin.

Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schryptofer explained that the names of VW models have a deep meaning for many people.

These names are already firmly attached to the minds of consumers, representing quality, eternal design, and technology for everyone. Therefore, we bring these iconic names to the future," he said.

Sch Marifer emphasized that Polo and Polo GTI were just the beginning. In the future, more legendary VW names will be revived in electric vehicle format.

"With this strategy, customers will find it easier to recognize our product portfolio, while still feeling emotional ties to the Volkswagen brand," he added.

This transformation also marks VW's ambition to be not only a pioneer in electrification, but also to keep its iconic legacy relevant in the era of electric vehicles.
