Edi Saputra Hasibuan Asks To Stop Criminalizing Two Employees Of PT WKM

JAKARTA - Executive Director of the Indonesian Police Strategic Studies Institute (Lemkapi) Dr Edi Saputra Hasibuan, asked prosecutors and judges to stop the alleged criminalization of two employees of PT Wana Kencana Mineral (WKM) who are currently undergoing trial proceedings at the Central Jakarta District Court.

The two employees are the Head of Mining Engineering & Hafidz and Mining Surveyor Marsel Bambang. Both of them currently have the status of defendants on charges of destroying the forest due to the installation of stakes in the nickel mining area in East Halmahera, as reported by the President Director of the Position Hari Aryanto Dharma Putra.

"Of course we have to wait for the results of the trial. However, after observing the facts of the trial that has been going on, the two employees (PT WKM) should have been released from all their demands by the panel of judges," said Edi during a conversation with the media in Jakarta, Wednesday (3/9/2025).

The chairman of the Indonesian Law and Criminology Lecturer Association (ADIHGI) sees that many of these cases have occurred in various legal cases in Indonesia. In an effort to encourage the creation of reforms in the legal field, he said, allegations of criminalization linked to the general public should be stopped.

"This legal reform is now a big concern in this country. So we strongly encourage enforcement to run and we always urge when there is a trial related to these kinds of issues to be stopped and the panel of judges must have the courage to decide freely," said the former member of the National Police Commission for the 2012-2016 term.

Previously, the attorney for two employees of PT WKM, OC Kaligis Kaligis, reported that his party had sent an open letter to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). An open letter entitled "illegal mining by PT P" was sent by Kaligis to the KPK leadership as an urging that the legal process for alleged criminalization that is being processed at the Central District Court can get special attention.

Meanwhile, at the last trial held last week, the decision on the sidelines of the Central Jakarta District Court (PN) rejected the application and decided to continue the trial. The legal exception submitted by the attorneys of two WKM employees was rejected so that they continued the process of examining the case towards the final decision.

"By taking into account all objections and arguments as considerations in the main investigation of the case, continuing the case until the final verdict," said the Chief Justice in a trial held on Wednesday (27/8/2025).
