Disney Pays IDR 164.2 Billion Million Fine For Illegal Child Data Collection Case

JAKARTA Walt Disney agreed to pay a fine of 10 million US dollars (Rp164.2 billion) to the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC). This fine relates to cases of illegal child data collection.

Some time ago, Disney was accused of not labeling some of its YouTube videos as 'made for children' content. As a result, the videos they upload collect unbounded personal data, even to children under the age of 13.

This problem is quite serious because all the data Disney collects is used to make ads. This ad also targets children. For this action, Disney was declared to have violated the Children's Online Privacy Protection Rules (COPPA).

In the regulation, all platforms targeting children under 13 years old must notify parents about data collection. Not only that, social media platforms must also obtain permission from parents before collecting personal data.

Disney's spokesman has confirmed the settlement of the case. The spokesperson stated that the problem of illegally collecting data only happened on YouTube and was not carried out on other platforms.

"This settlement does not involve Disney's digital platform and is operated, but is limited to the distribution of some of our content on the YouTube platform," the spokesperson said.

Disney emphasizes that they are trying to apply the highest compliance standards to child privacy laws. Disney spokesperson added that, "We remain committed to investing in the devices needed to continue to be leaders in this area."
