Komnas HAM Gather CCTV Footage To Check The Facts Of Affan Kurniawan's Death

JAKARTA - The National Human Rights Commission or Komnas HAM collects surveillance camera footage (Closed-circuitT Television/CCTV) to check the facts related to the death of driver Affan Kurniawan, who was allegedly hit and run over by a tactical police vehicle during a demonstration in Jakarta on August 28, 2025.

"We officially write to various agencies along the way to get CCTV footage and to ensure that we can collect all the facts before the incident, at the time of the incident, and after the incident," said Komnas HAM Commissioner for Monitoring and Investigation Saurlin P. Siagian in a press conference reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, September 2.

He conveyed the importance of examining video footage from surveillance cameras around the location of Affan Kurniawan (21) being hit and run over by a tactical vehicle belonging to the Police Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob) in the Pejompongan area, Central Jakarta, to verify the facts.

"We have to verify the pieces of facts circulating, including for example the videos that he said were encouraging, we need to make sure digitally that the events are true because we need certainty, whether they aregenuine (original) or have been edited jobs," he explained.

Komnas HAM is also ready to accommodate information and video recordings from residents about the incident that happened to Affan.

"Very openly we will accept it," said Saurlin.

In addition to collecting CCTV footage to check the facts, Komnas HAMingin received information about the conversations of police officers in tactical vehicles before, at the time, and after Affan was hit and run over by a police tactical vehicle.

"I think it is important for us to get all the facts needed later by Komnas HAM in compiling monitoring reports, investigations, we independently and then produce recommendations," said Saurlin.

Komnas HAM chairman Anis Hidayah said that so far ten people have died in demonstrations carried out in various regions to protest the increase in allowances for DPR members.

The ten people include Affan Kurniawan (Jakarta), Andika Lutfi Falah (Jakarta), Rheza Sendy Pratama (Yogyakarta), Sumari (Solo), Saiful Akbar (Makassar), Muhammad Akbar Basri (Makassar), Sarinawati (Makassar), Rusmadiansyah (Makassar), Iko Juliant Junior (Semarang), and Septinus Sesa (Manokwari).

Anis conveyed that Komnas HAM cooperated with other human rights institutions in investigating the cause of their deaths.
