Komnas HAM Respects UN Attention Regarding Handling Demos

JAKARTA - The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) respects the attention of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) regarding the handling of demonstrations in Indonesia.

"Of course we respect the attention of the United Nations which is very serious about the situation in Indonesia. Of course we agree that this dialogue space is very important," said Komnas HAM Chairman Anis Hidayah as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, September 2.

Anis said that Komnas HAM had communicated with the PBB. In addition, he said, his institution had recommended that the government open a space for dialogue for the public to voice unrest.

According to Komnas HAM's review, the demonstrations that have occurred in various cities lately are an accumulation because the dialogue space is not yet optimal.

"When people want to express their views related to problems that occur in society, then policies and others seem to be available, but access is not easy so this dialogue space is really needed," he said.

Meanwhile, regarding OHCHR's call for the Indonesian government to investigate alleged human rights violations during the handling of the action, Anis said that the Indonesian National Human Rights Commission had actually done that.

He explained that Komnas HAM was investigating the incident of the death of Affan Kurniawan, an online motorcycle taxi driver suspected of being run over by a Brimob tactical vehicle during the security of a demonstration in Jakarta, Thursday (28/8).

"Regarding the investigation, which is Affan, right, Komnas HAM is conducting an investigation, but because there are many cases that then also follow death and injuries, later this LN (National Institution) HAM will form a team that will be informed later how this team will work," he said.

Anis said that so far there have been ten fatalities in demonstrations against allowances for DPR members. The death toll was spread in various regions, including Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Solo, Makassar, Semarang, and Manokwari.

He detailed the ten fatalities, namely Affan Kurniawan (Jakarta), Andika Lutfi Falah (Jakarta), Rheza Sendy Pratama (Yogyakarta), Sumari (Solo, Central Java), and Saiful Akbar (Makassar, South Sulawesi),

Then, Muhammad Akbar Basri (Makassar), Sarinawati (Makassar), Rusmadiansyah (Makassar), Iko Juliant Junior (Semarang, Central Java), and Septinus Sesa (Manokwari, West Papua).

Previously, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights urged the Indonesian government to conduct a quick, thorough, and transparent investigation into alleged human rights violations in handling a series of demonstrations related to DPR allowances.

The statement was made by spokesman Ravina Shamdasani who was uploaded to the OHCHR Asia Instagram account this Tuesday.

"The authorities must uphold the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, as well as maintain order, in accordance with international norms and standards in managing public action," Ravina said.
