Response To UN Urges, Deputy Minister Of Foreign Affairs Affirms President Instructs Thorough Investigation Of Demonstrations

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) emphasized that President Prabowo Subianto had instructed a thorough investigation regarding protests that took place throughout last week.

The statement was made by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (Wamenlu) of Indonesia Anis Matta in response to the statement of the United Nations Human Rights office (UN) which also highlighted demonstrations in the country.

"The president has also conveyed instructions to carry out an overall investigation into this matter," said Deputy Foreign Minister Anis as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, September 2.

A spokesman for the United Nations Human Rights Office Ravina Shamdasani, via uploads on social media platform X on Tuesday, said the agency was closely following the series of violence that occurred in Indonesia in the context of national protests.

Citing allegations of unnecessary or excessive use of force by security forces, Shamdasani called for rapid, thorough, and transparent investigations into all alleged violations of international human rights law, including in terms of the use of force.

Shamdasani also asked authorities to uphold the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression while maintaining order in accordance with international norms and standards related to securing demonstrations.

He also highlighted that all security forces, including the military when deployed in law enforcement capacity, must comply with basic principles on the use of force and firearms by law enforcement officials.

Responding to the statement, Deputy Foreign Minister Anis said that President Subianto had visited the hospital to visit and have a dialogue with the victims of the demonstration and the police had also taken action against Brimob personnel to run over online motorcycle taxi drivers.

"So, the fulfillment side from the process side for basic human rights, God willing, will be fulfilled. There is no problem," said Anis.

The National Police's Propam Division (Divpropam) stated that seven members of the Metro Jaya Police Satbrimob who were involved in the tactical vehicle incident (rantis) hit an online motorcycle taxi driver (ojol), which was stipulated to have violated the police professional code of ethics.

"Against the seven people, it is certain that the suspects have been proven to have violated the police code of ethics," said the Head of the Propam Police Division Inspector General Abdul Karim at the Police Propam Building, Jakarta, Friday (2/9).

The seven members had the initials Kompol C, Aipda M, Bripka R, Brigadier B, Bripda M, Baraka Y, and Baraka J.

The decision was issued after the Divpropam carried out the initial case title with the Itwasum Polri, Divkum Polri, SDM Polri, and Head of Propam Korbrimob Polri. For this determination, the seven members underwent special placements (patsus) in the Police Propam Division.
