Imane Khelf Files An Appeal To CAS On Gender Issues

JAKARTA The gold medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Imane Khelive, has appealed to the Sports Arbitration Court (CAS) regarding World Boxing's decision to prohibit athletes from competing in the women's category if they do not undergo a gender test.

World Boxing in May 2025 made the decision for mandatory genetic tests for athletes who wanted to participate in their competition. Khhelif also objected to the regulation so he tried to annul it.

According to reports, in the appeal file submitted to CAS, Khelif requested that the agency approve him of the requirements to participate in the 2025 World Championship which will take place on September 4-14, 2025 without the need for a test.

However, a BBC Sport report said that CAS rejected a request to suspend a decision from World Boxing until the case was tried.

The agency said in an official statement that the correspondence between the two sides is currently underway and the trial will be scheduled in accordance with their approval.

Shortly after the decision in May 2025, World Boxing immediately apologized for mentioning Khelif's name in its announcement regarding the sex test that must be carried out by athletes.

Khelif won the women's welterweight gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics amid a dispute over genderworthiness.

The Algerian fighter and boxer Lin Yu-ting from China Taipei, was previously disqualified from the 2023 World Championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA) for allegedly failing a gender eligibility test.

However, both were allowed to compete in Paris by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the agency that revoked IBA's status as an international amateur boxing regulator in June 2023.

The IOC at that time confirmed that the two names met the requirements to fight in the women's category. Khelif was previously also noted to always compete in the women's number and never identified himself as having another gender.

Several reports have taken statements by IBA that Khhelif has XY chromodynamics, which raises speculation that he has differences in sexual development (DSD) such as runners of the Semenya cluster.

World Boxing was only given a temporary recognition as an international sports governing federation by the IOC in February 2025 replacing IBA.
