The Ministry Of Foreign Affairs And The Indonesian Embassy In Phnom Penh Facilitate The Repatriation Of Indonesian Citizens From Deli Serdang Who Died In Cambodia

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh facilitated the return of the body of an Indonesian citizen named Nazwa Aliya (NA) from Deli Serdang, North Sumatra who was flown from Phnom Penh on Saturday.

In accordance with an official explanation from the hospital and the Cambodian Police, NA died at Siem Reap Referral Hospital, Siem Reap, Cambodia on August 12, 2025 due to hepatitis toxic ( liver failure), which was caused by an overdose of paracetamol drugs.

"NA has been in Siem Reap since May 30, 2025 and has lived with old acquaintances from the family concerned," wrote the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh in his statement as quoted by 31 August.

The Indonesian Embassy further explained that NA visited Cambodia using a tourist visa. He did not work while in Cambodia and there was no indication that NA was a victim of TIP.

When contacted by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on May 31, 2025, NA admitted that she had left Indonesia on her own accord with family problems. He reported that he was free to move and communicate.

NA refused when offered mediation with his family and asked the Government to respect his choice as an adult who travels legally.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has visited NA's house in Deli Serdang to express condolences and explain the handling steps taken on August 12, 2025.

Through diplomatic channels, the Indonesian Embassy has also asked local authorities to investigate the events experienced by NA.

NA's body is planned to arrive at Kuala Namu Airport, Medan on Sunday, August 31, 2025, and then be handed over by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the family. The process of returning the bodies was supported by financing by donors who communicated directly with the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It is known, throughout 2024 the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh handled 3,310 cases of Indonesian citizens, including 92 cases of Indonesian citizens who died. 78 percent were caused by illness or other medical conditions, including stroke / heart (41 percent), tuberculosis / pneumonia (21 percent) and diabetes (7 percent). It is not known that Indonesian citizens died of kidney loss.

This year, until July, the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh has handled 3,256 cases of Indonesian citizens. The Indonesian Embassy appealed to Indonesian citizens in Cambodia to always adopt a healthy lifestyle and avoid actions that could have a negative impact on the physical and mental health of Indonesian citizens.
