Kyiv Bombarded, Russia-Ukraine War Believed Will Not End This Year
JAKARTA - Russia's aggression against Ukraine is believed not to end this year. Russia continues to attack Ukraine with the latest attack on Kyiv that killed dozens of people.
"This war will not end as quickly as some say and is believed. I don't want to be pessimistic, but I don't think the solution will be reached before the end of the year," Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Thursday, August 28.
"If Russia continues like this, obviously there will be new sanctions," he stressed.
18 people, including four children, were killed in Kyiv on Thursday following Russian missile and drone attacks that also undermined the European Union's mission and the British Council's office in the Ukrainian capital.
Separately, British Foreign Minister David Lemmy summoned Russia's ambassador to Britain, after Russia attacked Ukraine with missiles and drones overnight, killing 15 people and destroying buildings, including the British Council in Kyiv.
"The attack (President of Russia Vladimir) Putin last night killed civilians, destroyed houses, and damaged buildings, including the British Council and the European Union Delegation in Kyiv," Lemmy said in X.
"We have summoned the Russian Ambassador. Murder and destruction must be stopped," he continued.
Separately, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Russia's attack on Kyiv, including against the European Union's diplomatic mission in the Ukrainian capital, could not be left without a response.
"Last night we were again watching in a terrible way how Russia attacked and bombed Kyiv, civilians were killed, children killed, and the EU delegation was also attacked, and that cannot be left unequivocal," said Wadephul.
The Kremlin previously confirmed it was still interested in continuing peace negotiations related to Ukraine despite Russia launching a major and deadly attack on Kyiv overnight.
Ukrainian officials say the attack has killed 15 people, including four children, in an attack on the Ukrainian capital which President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said was Moscow's response to diplomatic efforts to end the war.

Asked if there was a contradiction between Moscow's desire to make progress in the peace negotiations and the attack, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the two sides continued to attack each other but Russia was still interested in achieving its goals through diplomacy.
According to him, Russian troops continue to target the Ukrainian military and military-related infrastructure.
Peskov repeatedly emphasized Russia was accidentally targeting civilians.
He said Ukraine was also continuing its attacks on Russian infrastructure, including civilian infrastructure.
"Special military operations continue. You can see that attacks on Russian infrastructure, often against Russian civilian infrastructure, the Kyiv regime is also continuing," Peskov said.
