3 Forms of Associative Processes that Occur in Society, What Are They?

YOGYAKARTA – What are the three forms of associative processes? Before we answer, let's first understand what an associative process is.

According to Budi Rahayu's book "Sociology of High Schools," associative processes are one form of social interaction that exists in society.

In the Big Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI), social interaction is defined as a dynamic social relationship between individuals, between individuals and groups, and between groups.

Social interaction can occur anywhere, including in our daily lives. Social interaction that leads to the unity and integrity of society is called an associative social process.

Based on its form, associative processes are divided into three major groups: cooperation, accommodation, and acculturation.

The following is an explanation of the forms of associative processes, as adapted from Sri Uji Pratiwi's book "Sociology of Social Relations."

3 Forms of Associative Process

  1. Cooperation

Cooperation is the primary form of associative processes. This social interaction occurs to achieve shared interests or needs, whether between individuals or groups.

Some types of social interactions that arise from cooperation include:

  • Bargaining is a form of cooperation in which goods or services are exchanged between two or more organizations.
  • Co-optation is the process of accepting new elements into the leadership of an organization to avoid disruption.
  • A coalition is a form of cooperation between two or more organizations with a common goal.
  • A joint venture is a form of cooperation between two or more companies that pool resources, capital, expertise, and risk to undertake a specific project for mutual benefit.
  1. Accommodation

The next form of associative process is accommodation. This term is defined as the process of individual or group adjustment in an effort to resolve tensions.

This social interaction can reduce differences of opinion and political disagreements, and even prevent conflict. Some forms of accommodation include:

  • Compromise is an attempt to resolve a dispute by mutually alleviating demands to reach a mutually acceptable solution.
  • Arbitration is a form of accommodation that occurs when disputing parties are unable to reach a compromise on their own, so they invite an impartial third party to resolve the conflict.
  • Mediation is a form of accommodation that also involves a third party who acts as a mediator or peacemaker.
  • Coercion is a form of accommodation implemented through coercion by one party against a weaker party, dominated by a group.
  • Tolerance is a form of accommodation undertaken to avoid detrimental conflict.
  1. Acculturation

Acculturation is an associative process that occurs when humans adopt new elements into a culture without eliminating old ones. In other words, acculturation is the result of the long-term blending of two cultures.

One example of acculturation is the fusion of Malay and Portuguese music, resulting in the keroncong genre.
