Italian Prime Minister Condemns Israeli Attack To Kill Journalists In Gaza

JAKARTA - Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the "unjustible" killing of journalists in Gaza.

Israel attacked Nasser Hospital in the south of the Gaza Strip on Monday, killing 20 people, including five journalists working for Reuters, Associated Press, Al Jazeera, and others.

"This is an unacceptable attack on press freedom and everyone who has dared to risk their lives to report on the tragedy of war," Meloni said.

Meloni was one of the last Western leaders to condemn Israel's attack on Monday, which drew widespread international criticism.

Israel says journalists are not the target of the Nasser Hospital attack.

Israel is preparing to launch a new attack on Gaza City, which it describes as Hamas' last stronghold. About half of the two million residents of the area currently live there and Israel says they will be ordered to evacuate.

"We have no doubts about defending Israel, but at the same time we cannot remain silent now in the face of reactions that have gone far beyond the principles of proportionality, killing innocent victims and threatening the Christian community, endangering historic solutions (two countries)," said the Italian PM.

Meloni also asked Israel to end its military occupation of Gaza, allow aid to enter the Palestinian enclave and stop expanding settlements in the West Bank.
