Rano Karno Marked That Jakarta Has Leveled Streets To Overcome Traffic Jams: Extraordinary Revolution

JAKARTA - Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta Rano Karno suspects that roads in Jakarta are built with the concept of a multi-level road to overcome congestion which is still a classic problem.

Rano sees that the concept of a three-story street or triple deck has been implemented in Thailand. According to him, the same traffic spatial planning can also be used in Jakarta.

"Thailand, Bangkok, experienced the same thing with Jakarta. But there they immediately triple decked. It's a bit broken down. If we do triple deck in Jakarta, it's an extraordinary revolution," said Rano, Wednesday, August 27.

According to Rano, the current length of the roads in Jakarta is no longer ideal to accommodate all the number of vehicles crossing the capital every day. Thus, congestion is unavoidable.

Therefore, there needs to be breakthroughs such as the construction of multilevel roads. At least, multilevel roads can be implemented in the city center.

"As soon as I saw the depiction, wow, this should have been around Monas, this should have been upper deck. Because if you look at the Jakarta city area, in quotes, it is not ideal to be the number of vehicles," said Rano.

However, Rano acknowledged that efforts to resolve congestion include adding multilevel roads and expanding modes of public transportation cannot be carried out in a short time.

"Bangkok is building a city for almost 4 years, only to build this (triple deck). Bangkok doesn't have MRT yet, we have MRT, that's also one way. We have even arrived (building the MRT route) to Kota Tua, although maybe 2029 is just finished. But that's one way," he said.

Rano said that Jakarta has a serious challenge as a metropolitan city, namely traffic jams that occur every day. Based on the study of Bappenas and Jabodetabek Urban Transportation Policy Integration (JUTPI) II in 2019, it revealed that losses due to congestion in Jabodetabek reached Rp. 100 trillion per year.

This figure, according to him, is equivalent to four percent of Jabodetabek's gross domestic product (GDP) or six times the first phase of MRT development costs.

Therefore, Rano emphasized that collaboration of all parties is needed as an effort to control congestion, and is supported by technological-based transformation.

"We have memorized Jakarta congestion. We cannot blank who is wrong with all kinds of things, but that is the reality of Jakarta. It is time for us to invite collaboration, both the Police, TNI, then other stakeholders, as well as other regional leaders, so that transportation circulation in Jakarta can be decomposed immediately," he concluded.
