PVMBG Reveals Mount Sangeang Api NTB Saves Tsunami Potential Due To Abortion Eruption
JAKARTA - Mount Sangeang Api is one of 127 active volcanoes in Indonesia. The eruption characteristics tend to be explosive with repeated activity records, so they are included in the category of volcanic ones that are monitored intensively.
Quoting Antara, PVMBG emphasizes the importance of community preparedness because the tsunami threat due to the eruption of avalanches can have an impact on the coastal communities of Bima and surrounding areas, including dense local shipping routes.
In addition to the potential for a tsunami, the volcano also threatens with other dangers such as the ejection of incandescent stones, heavy ash rain, and lava flows. Maps of disaster-prone areas continue to be updated as a basis for mitigation.

Technically, PVMBG has set the radius of the Disaster Prone Area (KRB) on Mount Sangeang Api, Bima, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). KRB III is within a 03 kilometer radius of the crater, potentially affected by the ejection of incandescent stones and hot clouds.
KRB II covers a radius of 35 kilometers with the risk of lava flow, heavy ash rain, and hot lava that can follow the valleys around the mountain body.
KRB I extends up to 8 kilometers from the crater. Although relatively safer, this area still has the potential to be affected by ash rain, cold lava flows, and volcanic material carried by the river.
Cross-agency coordination between PVMBG, BNPB, BMKG, and local governments is said to be important to ensure the early warning system runs effectively while reducing the risk of casualties.
Mount Sangeang Api is currently in level I or normal activity. On July 1-31, 2025, PVMBG recorded 3 gusts of earthquakes, 1 shallow volcanic earthquake, 2 deep volcanic earthquakes, 1 local tectonic earthquake, 1 earthquake was felt on a scale of III MMI, and 8 distant tectonic earthquakes.
