Coffee Makes Healthy Or Secretly Drains Body Fluid?

JAKARTA - Coffee has long been part of the lifestyle of many people, not only adding energy in the morning but also social rituals.

Behind its popularity, this drink stores two opposing sides, on the one hand it is rich in antioxidants, but on the other hand it can trigger a diuretic effect that makes the body lose more fluid faster.

Professor of Food and Nutrition from the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) Prof. Dr. Ali Khomsan, MS said that coffee consumption in reasonable doses still provides benefits.

"The coffee water is taken one to two cups a day, good because the coffee contains antioxidants in it, but the coffee is also a diuretic nature," he said as quoted by ANTARA.

He explained that someone who drinks coffee will tend to urinate more often.

"If we have finished drinking coffee, we will urinate a lot," he said.

To prevent the risk of dehydration due to the diuretic effect, Ali suggested that you continue to consume enough water.

"So the benefits of antioxidants from coffee can, but we also don't get dehydrated," he added.

Even so, he emphasized that coffee with additional milk or sugar does not damage its antioxidant content.

"Antioxidants will not be damaged due to additional milk or other sugars. So in principle, we drink tea, coffee, or chocolate, all sources of antioxidants. Likewise, fruits, orange ice, all of them can be a source of antioxidants because they come from vitamins, minerals, and other body components," Ali explained.

Meanwhile, lifestyle coach Nidhi Nahata suggested that daily caffeine intake be limited to a maximum of 300350 ml or about two small cups. According to him, although useful, coffee can still cause problems if consumed excessively.

Diuretic effects from coffee can cause the body to urinate more often, lose fluids, to mild dehydration. This condition risks causing complaints such as bloating, dry skin, headaches, low energy, to non-optimal digestion.
