OpenAI To Establish First Office In India
JAKARTA OpenAI, the company that developed ChatGPT, will set up its first office in India. The company confirmed that it would make New Delhi its first location.
This news was revealed directly to Reuters on Friday, August 22. Currently, the OpenAI office is in the construction stage and its plan, the office will be opened and inaugurated by the end of this year.
The establishment of this office shows OpenAI's commitment to strengthening its position in the Indian market. As the country with the second largest number of internet users in the world, OpenAI wants to attract more users from the country.
OpenAI revealed that they have established legal entities in India. The company has also recruited local teams. This is an important first step before building a strong presence in the country.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that the opening of this office is part of the company's commitment to making AI more accessible. The hope is that this expansion can advance the local AI ecosystem.
"Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to making advanced AI more accessible across the country and building AI for India, and alongside India," said Altman.

India's choice as the location of the expansion is also not surprising. The reason is, India is the country with the highest number of students in the world using ChatGPT. In addition, the total number of users in the country has also increased.
Recent data from OpenAI shows that weekly active users in India have quadrupled in the past year. However, this is not enough for OpenAI so they launched their cheapest monthly package recently.
The package is called ChatGPT Go and is priced at 399 rupees or around Rp. 76 thousand per month. This is the package with the cheapest price OpenAI has ever offered.
