Rice Prices Start To Drop, Government Ensures Safe Stock Until The End Of 2025

JAKARTA - Minister of Agriculture (Mentan) Andi Amran Sulaiman ensured that market operations carried out by the government began to show results.

Rice distribution to the market has now reached 6,000 tons per day, so rice prices have slowly fallen in a number of areas.

He conveyed the certainty of the price reduction in a working meeting with Commission IV of the DPR RI, at the Parliament Building, Jakarta, Thursday, August 21.

"Our market operations have now reached 6,000 tons per day, now there has been a decline in prices. God willing, in the future, the stock we have prepared is the highest, the SPHP 1.3 million tons which has never happened before. This has decreased rice in 13 provinces. We will do it until December our plan, continuously because our stock is quite large," Amran was quoted as saying through the DPR Commission IV channel.

Amran explained that the government is optimizing rice distribution with a longer shelf life so that year-end stocks are dominated by domestic production.

"That this stock is a rather high age that we spend. So that the stock at the end of the year will be domestically produced, there will be no imported rice, and the rice will still be fresh," he continued.

Safe Rice Stock Until The End Of 2025

In line with that, the Head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas) Arief Prasetyo Adi said that the availability of strategic food, especially rice, is projected to be safe until the end of 2025.

"Based on the projection of the National Food Balance for the January-December 2025 period, the availability of strategic food staples is generally projected to be sufficient and safe until the end of 2025," he said.

"Weight production in 2025 is projected at 31.37 million tons with a consumption rate of 30.97 million tons so that the year-end rice balance is 9.33 million tons," continued Arief.

He added, if the target of planting 1 million hectares per month is achieved, then rice production can reach 2.5 million tons per month.

Even so, production usually decreases in the period November to January, which is below 1.5 million tons per month.

Based on data as of August 20, 2025, Perum Bulog's rice stock was recorded at 3.93 million tons spread across warehouses throughout Indonesia.

Of that amount, 1.07 million tons came from foreign procurement with a shelf life of more than four months (98.8 percent), while stocks from domestic procurement reached 2.83 million tons with 1.46 million tons of which were more than four months old.

With this projection, the government is optimistic that rice prices will remain under control and the needs of the community will be safe until the end of next year.
