Recently Released, Apple AirTag Can Be Hacked

JAKARTA - Security researchers can hack Apple's AirTag accessories by simply modifying their Near Field Communication (NFC) URL to use as desired.

The device, which launched last month, is designed to be paired with often misplaced items such as locks. For example, when you can't remember where you left the key that airtag has pinned, then you can use your smartphone to make it make a sound, making it easier to find the item.

But as reported from Techradar, Monday, May 10, German security researcher Stack Smashing revealed in a tweet that it can "break into air tag microcontrollers" and modify elements of item tracking software.

Known, the microcontroller is an integrated circuit (IC) used to control the device. Usually through microprocessing units, memory, and other peripherals.

According to AllAboutCircuits, the device is optimized for embedded applications that require agile processing functionality and responsive interaction with digital, analog, or electromechanical components.

After gaining control over the microcontroller, the researchers changed the URL that appears in the notification when the AirTag is in Lost Mode. In the video uploaded by Stack Smashing, it compares the usual AirTag to the modified one.

When AirTag usually opens the Find My website, the modified AirTag opens an unrelated URL, the device opens a phishing website or transmits any type of malware.

However, current users will have to wait and see if Apple can implement a server-side blocking mechanism to prevent modified AirTags from accessing Find My Network.
