Tottenham's New Captain, Cristian Romero, Signs Contract Until 2029
JAKARTA - Cristian Romero has promised his long-term future with Tottenham Hotspur by signing a new contract.
In ESPN's report, the contract will take effect until the end of the 2028/2029 season.
The club's new 28-year-old contract confirmation came after he was appointed the club's new captain following Son Heung-min's transfer to Los Angeles FC (Major League Soccer).
Romero, the centre-back of the World Cup winner and two Copa Americas, has the remainder of a two-year contract and his future in north London is uncertain this summer.
Atletico Madrid is the club that has been chasing his signature since the start of this summer's transfer market.
However, now certainty has come. Romero chose to serve Spurs in the long term.

Romero's appointment as new captain by manager Thomas Frank the day before Spurs' narrow defeat at the UEFA Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday, August 14, 2025 - where Romero scored a header in the second half - was the first clue that the player saw his long future at the club.
However, this new contract confirmation is a big boost for Thomas Frank, who led an impressive 3-0 win over Burnley in the Premier League opener on Saturday, August 16, 2025.
Romero joined Spurs from Serie A club Atalanta in 2021 and his performance at the heart of defense became an important part of Spurs' success in the Europa League under former head coach, Ange Postecoglou.
He captained Spurs when Son was absent from the last 16 of the Europa League onwards. He was later named the best player in the 1-0 win over Manchester United in the final.
Earlier, on Monday, August 18, 2025, Spurs announced that Romero's defender Djed Spence has also signed a new long-term contract.
