Shipyard Worker Dies Falling Into Batam Waters, Police Investigate Work Safety SOP

JAKARTA - The Criminal Investigation Unit of the Barelang Police in Riau Islands investigated the cause of a work accident experienced by a shipyard worker who fell into the sea until he was found dead in the waters of Batam City.

"Yes, we are investigating the incident," said Kasatreskrim Polresta Barelang Kompol Debby Tri Andreastia in Batam, Tuesday, confiscated by Antara.

Debby said this investigation was carried out to determine the cause of the victim's work accident, to determine whether the company implemented a safety SOP.

According to him, this legal certainty is needed to ensure the security of investment in Batam City, as well as protection for workers.

"We are still collecting materials and information (pulbaket) related to the incident," he said.

A shipyard worker named Iqnasius (47) fell and sank while trying to board a launching balloon to land along with five other colleagues, in the waters of Lestari Oceana Indonesia, Tanjung Uncang, Batam City, Monday, August 18.

To raise the launching balloon that sank under Oceania's 300 barge, about 15 to 20 minutes the victim did not appear again to the surface.

The joint SAR team from the Tanjungpinang SAR, and the Batam SAR Post, as well as the Riau Islands Police Polairud conducted a search for the victim after receiving the report. The search was carried out until 01.00 in the morning, but the victim was not found.

Until the second day of search started this morning at 07.00 WIB, the joint SAR Team managed to find the whereabouts of the victim 500 meters from the location where the victim fell at 09.35 WIB.

The victim was found dead, with the body still intact and recognizable. Then the body was taken to the Bhayangkara Hospital of the Riau Islands Police to be handed over to the victim's family.

A work accident that happened to shipyard employees also occurred on Tuesday, June 24, leaving four people dead, and five others injured.
